Learning the proper techniques and use of climbing equipment opens up a whole new world of exciting adventure, and provides new feelings of confidence. The proper techniques, balance and control are more important to climbing than superhuman strength or hundreds of dollars worth of gear. For more than 15 years, the Texas Mountaineers have safely provided instruction to North Texas area outdoor enthusiasts interested in learning about this exciting, challenging sport. There is a weekend beginner and intermediate class each spring and fall at the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge in Oklahoma. These classes are devoted to the development of safe climbing practices and climbing techniques for beginner and novice climbers. Each class starts with an evening classroom session prior to the trip, and is followed the next weekend by the outdoor session. Students are paired with one instructor and one assistant for personalized, one-on-one training. If needed, the club can provide all climbing gear except the student's climbing shoes and camping gear (which can be rented in local recreational equipment stores). Beginner Class:
The primary purpose for the beginner climbing class is to provide a safe and enjoyable introduction to rock climbing. All climbs during the beginner class are toproped. Students will be taught the following climbing concepts:
Beginners are not expected to have any previous climbing experience. Intermediate Class: The intermediate class is designed for student who has taken the beginner class or equivalent course. Students will follow the climbing instructors on multi-pitch climbs and learn the technical aspects of placing safe protection. The climbing instructor may let the student practice on a "simulated" lead climb. Signing Up: If you are interested in joining the beginner or intermediate class, send us an email. We will send you more details about the class. Class Fee: $90 for individuals, $160 for couples; both fees include a required one year membership in the Texas Mountaineers. If you are already a member, the class fee is only $60 per person. Check Activities page for the dates. | |||||||||||||||||||
